Bungalows don’t have to be boring

The bungalow has become a common feature in the Irish Countryside with many being build throughout Ireland and especially since the 1960’s when the long rectangle shaped plan first appeared. Originally this new home had an air of modernity associated with it. The large picture windows, so common to the front, were considered the mark of progressive good taste at this time.

Many people have lived happily in this type of house without realising that they may be missing out. Often the design process is one of taking a standard plan and putting this design unto the site with little regard to such considerations as the view or sun-path associated with the site. When we make an investment in a new house, we may intend to spend all our life’s in it. Surely it is important to design and build our new home as something that is a delight to live in.

Traditional Bungalow Design

Paul McAlister Architects have looked at the plan of a modest family bungalow and looked at how with some imagination the home may become one filled with light and delight. The use of more glass allows a visual and physical connection with the landscape surrounding the house. The sun-path is captured throughout the day in the arrangement of rooms.

We have been looking at various sites and using considered design to maximise the potential for a home which creates delight for the owner and added value with the design.
